Toku What? Sat Where?

Wikipedia: Tokusatsu (特撮?) is a Japanese term that applies to any live-action film or television drama that usually features superheroes and makes considerable use of special effects (tokusatsu literally translates as "special filming" in Japanese).

So I've always been a fan of this genre since as long as I can remember, with Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, Godzilla movies, and other such things I saw in the nineties. Just recently however, I have had a revival in interest in the genre and have been bingeing for the past two weeks. I've been indulging myself with scouring Youtube for Power Ranger episodes, which in turn lead me to search for the original Japanese version. I've watched about the first eight episodes of the Japanese, version which I find to be better. Instead of most of the episode being worried how Trini is afraid of heights, its about defeating the invisible Goblin eating children's souls. Don't get me wrong, I love the American version and I watched it religiously up until Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, where I pretty much gave up on the franchise. I'm just saying the Japanese plot and script is just so much richer than the American counterpart.

I've also found on Youtube a piece of my fragmented childhood; a series in which I had toys for and a vague memory of five minutes of the episode, and for 15 years had no idea what it was. Upon searching Wikipedia and Google for the term Tokusatsu I finally found the jigsaw piece that made my world make sense: Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad. I know what a mouthful right? Just a warning; the script is downright awful, the episodes' plots are mediocre at best, the characters are mostly obnoxious on some level, and the antagonist (not the main villian) is this weirdo artsy loner kid who is warped and sometimes has an accent. So why did I watch the first five episodes and not stop after the pilot? First: nostalgia. Second: the Japanese footage with all the action and sparkler effects. Third: Tim Curry is the voice of the main villian. Also the fashion in the show is horrifically 90's, whether thats a pro or a con to you (show aired from September 12, 1994 to July 15, 1995). But hey, I'm still going to sit down and watch both seasons. >.>

I've also been looking up old school giant monster stuff like Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman, etc. Saw I few fights of Ultraman on Youtube (never seeing anything of Ultraman before) and saw how badass he is. He was cocky, made jokes at his opponents expense, and literally ripped the frill off of his neck! SO BADASS!! Link to video of Ultraman vs. Jirass. But all this research, and rekindling with my childhood has inspired a new ambition within me, to make my own giant monster movie. And not with CGI but suitmation (the giant rubber suits), original style with sparklers and everything. Now just need to know how to make them. :/
